 Adolf Hitler, after the German army conquered France in 1940, paid a visit to the Canadian Monument at Vimy Ridge. Up to that time, Hitler had ordered  many of the French WW I monuments depicting  victory over Germany destroyed. The Canadian Monument was left untouched out of respect for the monument and the Canadian soldier.
